Interior Design Tip #3

Design & Repeat

When choosing colours for your home, repeat, repeat, repeat.

Find your style palette. This are the colours, patterns & textures which you instinctively use or are drawn to. If you aren’t sure, take a look at the décor you have purchased over the years, you will find common themes. These may also repeat in your clothing choice, linen or work space. If you are still not sure, you can browse websites like Pinterest & save the images you like, where you will probably find a theme.

Once you are aware of your favourites, see which ones marry together well & then repeat them through your home.

How to do it

For example, your colours may be brown based neutral tones with white, soft greens & woollen textures. This allows you to have one soft green painted room, while the rest is neutral & white, but add a green cushion or woollen throw or cushion to those neutral rooms to repeat the theme.

Wood can be difficult as different timber colours can look miles apart. Best to find a timber tone you like & try to keep all your wood items in that theme. Timbers can really date to eras so be aware of what your wood colour & style are saying.

Why to repeat

This creates Unity & Variety into your home as well as Balance & Rhythm. These are Design Elements, or the science behind Interior Design which allows experts to get it right. If the science is a topic you are interested in click here for more information.

It also allows you to move items around between rooms with the knowledge that they will work, giving you a chance to keep your look fresh. Remember – this is based on YOUR style, so this will help you when you are shopping for a new piece to know what not to look at.
