Stick To Neutrals
White, Off-White, Black, Charcoal, Brown, Grey, Taupe, Mushroom, Stone, Beige, Natural & Linen… these all sit under the title of ‘Neutral’.
These shades sit in a natural palette & are a great base colour to allow your accent colours to stand out. As these hues are based in nature, they can usually be teamed together as well to give a white-on-white look for your home, & can easily be matched to timber & stone finishes.
As these are based in the natural palette, they are less likely to date.
Dated or Timeless
Bold colours can look old fashioned & can tie your home to a certain time in history, such as the lime greens & orange of the 70’s, mint tones of the 1930’s or red, black & stainless of the 1990’s. Neutrals are seen throughout all stages of history allowing it to be timeless.
When you research Design Styles, you will find a Neutral in every option – Scandi & French Provincial have off-whites, Industrial has charcoals & black, Hamptons, Boho & Modern Country Styles are soft neutrals. This makes it easy to use Neutrals as a base colour & accentuate with pops which can be removed as the styles change.
Planning
When planning on any large purchase for your home, like whole house paint, new floor tiles, new window coverings or a larger sofa set, it is best to keep within the neutrals. This will make these expensive elements more timeless & will not cost you as much to replace.
But be careful not to be too bland. Beige on beige can look drab & boring. You need to pop your personality in there too!
You can add colour & personality with the décor or accented areas, like a feature wall or art. Luckily, at the moment there are plenty of décor options, from indoor plants to throws & cushions, floor rugs & lamps to all help add YOUR style to the neutral base. Using colour in décor makes it easily changeable as your styles alter.
